Will Shakira Finally Take a Break?

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Shakira thisday music festival

Shakira
has said that she would take a break after the Oral Fixation tour was finished. But her commitment with the creation of a better world has already delayed her vacations: a new altruistic cause brought Shakira back to the stage.

Shakira played in Nigeria
, participating on the ThisDay Music Festival. The Festival not only boost the Nigerian music scene, but also has a positive impact in other areas, such as tourism and economy. ThisDay also has helped to create a positive image for the country.

Nigeria is the last country in which Shakira has performed, after a whole year of international success. Now she’s headed to her well deserved vacations, but I won’t be surprised if she comes back for more charity work. Shakira has already announced a new campaign to raise $200 million (£100 million) for the fight against juvenile malnutrition and hunger in Latin America.

Shakira and Enrique Iglesias Will Perform at the Live Earth Hamburg Concert

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007
shakira3.jpg

On June 13th, I wrote about Shakira's participation in the Live Earth: The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis, in Hamburg. Today I received a press release confirming the info (and that’s funny - none of the numerous sources I checked to write the post mentioned that Shakira’s performance wasn’t confirmed):

Shakira and Enrique Iglesias will be playing in Live Earth Hamburg at HSH Nordbank Arena on 7/7/07, Live Earth organizers announced today (June 22). Tickets for Live Earth Hamburg are available at Eventim - Live Earth Tickets.

Shakira is a two-time Grammy Award-winning and eight-time Latin Grammy Award-winning Colombian singer, songwriter and producer and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.

Her 2001 English language breakthrough, Laundry Service, sold more than 20 million albums and made her a global sensation.

In early 2005, Shakira released the Oral Fixation project: Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation Vol. 2 have sold a combined 15 million copies worldwide to date and earned five Latin Grammys, including Album of the Year, six Latin Billboard Awards, two Almas Awards, and numerous other awards around the world.

She also just completed her Oral Fixation Tour around the world that included 120 sold-out dates.

In 1995, Shakira created the Pies Descalzos Foundation aimed at helping Colombian children who are victims of violence. She was also instrumental in the creation Alas, an organization of the Latin world's biggest stars who are working to bring awareness to the social and economic conditions of children in Latin America.

Enrique Iglesias, the Madrid-born, Miami-raised singer, has sold more than 40 million albums and has topped the charts and gone platinum with both English and Spanish language works. Iglesias won the Grammy for Best Latin Performer in 1997 and the Latin Grammy for Best Male Pop Album in 2003.

His new album, Insomniac, was released last week, and the single “Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)” has jumped to the top of the US, UK, Mexico, Sweden, Netherlands and other charts. Iglesias is the most successful Spanish-language singer in the world with 17 #1 Billboard Latin hits, more than any other artist in history. His albums have gone gold or platinum in more than 30 countries.

“Live Earth is about engaging a mass movement of people to take action against the climate crisis,” Live Earth Founder and Producer Kevin Wall said. “The addition of internationally popular music acts like Enrique Iglesias and Shakira will help us reach millions of people across the globe.”

Shakira Will Sing At The 2° Edition of THISDAY Music Festival

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Africa.gif
Colombian-born US popstar, Shakira, African-American R&B rising star, John Legend and British iconic group, UB40, are among 12 Nigerian and international artistes who have confirmed participation at the second edition of THISDAY Music Festival scheduled to hold on July 14 and 15 at THISDAY’s brand new event centre in Lagos. The centre has a seating capacity of 15,000.

The celebrated international music stars will be following in the footsteps of Beyonce, Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, En Vogue and Missy Elliot who graced the first edition of the festival last year in an event described in the entertainment circle as unprecedented in the world’s history.

Shakira, born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977, is a two-time Grammy Award-winning and eight-time Latin Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, record producer, dancer and occasional actress. She has been a major figure in the pop music scene of Latin America since the mid-1990s.

Six years ago, she broke through into the English-speaking market with the release of her first album in the language, Laundry Service, which has sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Shakira has sold around 15 million albums worldwide. She is also the only artiste from South America to reach the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, the Australian ARIA chart and the UK Singles Chart. Shakira is also known for her intelligence, having an IQ of 140, and her ability to speak five languages.

On Sunday, May 27, 2007, she made history by giving the largest concert ever in Mexican history. Over 200,000 people gathered in Plaza del Zocalo, the town square of Mexico City, for the final Mexican stop on the Oral Fixation Tour. The previous record was held by the Mexican group Cafe Tacuba with 165,000 in attendance.

(…)

More artistes billed to perform in the star-studded music festival are expected to confirm their participation next week.

Tickets for the two-day event will go on sale at all branches of GTBank on June 14. The classic ticket will cost N10,000 per day, while the VIP ticket will go for N25,000 per day. Tickets for the exclusive but limited state box will go for N50,000 per day.
